The 3 Ways to Pronounce Final S
1. Unvoiced /s/ (voiceless)
Use after unvoiced sounds (p, k, t, f, ph, th). Vocal cords do not vibrate. Soft “s” sound.
Examples: sleeps, books, hats, cliffs, graphs, months
2. Voiced /z/
Use after voiced sounds (b, d, g, l, m, n, r, v). Vocal cords vibrate. Buzzing “z” sound.
Examples: crabs, words, bags, falls, dreams, fans, wears, gloves
3. Sibilant /ɪz/
Use after sibilant sounds (s, z, sh, ch, x, ge). Extra syllable. Hissing /ɪz/ sound.
Examples: races, buses, boxes, prizes, watches, dishes, changes
Practice Tip
Most English words that end in a vowel sound use the /z/ pronunciation for S (plays, sees, tries, follows, continues). Practice by recording yourself and comparing to native speakers.
