ACCENT QUESTIONS

Why do people ask me to repeat myself?

What American ears actually listen for, and a short drill to switch to body voice.

Over 8,000 lessons taught · Updated Nov 1, 2026

The short answer

Usually because you are speaking from the mouth instead of the body. American ears lock onto vibration, resonance and musicality, so even when your words are correct, a flat mouth voice makes people ask you to say it again.

What Josh points out

Your ears grab the familiar sounds

Your brain holds on to sounds that feel familiar from your native language, usually hard consonants, and you send those back when you speak.

American English is not carried by consonants

American ears lock onto vibration, resonance and musicality: the voice coming from the body.

Three body voice rules

Start the voice from the diaphragm, keep the chest vibration on the whole time, and keep musicality on with no flat sections.

The UH drill

Do the intonation on “uh” only, then say the sentence with the same breath path and resonance, putting the words softly on top.

What American ears listen for

Learners listen for the letters. Native speakers listen for the parts in between the letters: the size and shape of the sounds.

FAQ

Why do people ask me to repeat myself when my English is correct?

Correct words are not enough. If the voice comes from the mouth with flat sections, it does not send the vibration and musicality American ears lock onto.

What is body voice?

A voice that starts from the diaphragm, keeps chest vibration on the whole time and keeps musicality on, with the words placed on top.

Is there a quick drill?

Yes. Do the intonation on “uh” only, then say the sentence keeping the same resonance, with the words softly on top.

What should I listen for?

Learners listen for the letters. Native speakers listen for the parts in between the letters: the size and shape of the sounds.
