ACCENT QUESTIONS

Why don’t Americans understand my accent?

Why non-native speakers understand each other, and what American ears listen for instead.

Over 8,000 lessons taught · Updated Nov 1, 2026

The short answer

Often because you are speaking international English: the right words with your first-language rhythm. Equal syllables, heavy consonants and almost no space are easy for other non-native speakers to follow, but that is not the format American ears listen for.

What Josh points out

International English

Same words, first-language rhythm: equal syllables, heavy consonants, almost no space, and fast enough that other learners keep up.

No pitch distance

In “amazing,” the stressed syllable needs a clear jump in pitch. Without that distance the word is harder to catch.

The vowel disappears

In “Champions League” and “people,” the vowel is gone, so the stressed part has nothing to carry it.

A closed mouth traps the sound

With a small mouth position, the space and the focus on the vowels disappear, and phrases like “we have to be” come out with no contrast.

What American ears listen for

Learners listen for the letters. Native speakers listen for the parts in between the letters: the size and shape of the sounds.

FAQ

Why don’t Americans understand my accent?

Often because the rhythm comes from your first language: equal syllables, heavy consonants and little space. American ears listen for clear contrast and open vowels.

Why do other non-native speakers understand me?

Many of them share the same international English rhythm, so they keep up with each other.

What is pitch distance?

The jump in pitch on the stressed syllable. In “amazing,” a bigger jump makes the word much easier to catch.

What should I listen for?

Learners listen for the letters. Native speakers listen for the parts in between the letters: the size and shape of the sounds.
